At C0deEX, science comes alive through real experiments, guided investigations, and hands-on projects. Our afterschool science courses turn everyday questions into discoveries, building the same problem-solving skills that power our coding and robotics programs.
Young Explorers (Grades K-3)
Spark & Slime: Hands-On Science Adventures & Experiment-Based Learning
Get ready to mix, bubble, build, and explore! In this exciting hands-on science course, young learners become real scientists as they dive into fun, age-appropriate experiments that spark curiosity and creativity. Each week, students will roll up their sleeves and explore core science concepts through play and discovery. Some of the activities include:
- Making slime to learn about states of matter
- Building mini-volcanoes and watching chemical reactions in action
- Discovering how plants drink water with our rainbow celery experiment
- Creating simple circuits with batteries and bulbs
- Growing crystals from sugar or salt to explore how solids form
- Testing which everyday objects float or sink and why
- Building a baking soda and vinegar powered rocket
- Making a homemade lava lamp to observe density in action
This course is all about doing—not just watching. With minimal lecture and maximum interaction, it's the perfect way to introduce budding scientists to the wonders of the world around them.
Junior Innovators (Grades 4-6)
A hands-on, experiment-based science course that challenges students to think, test, and build like real scientists. Kids dig deeper into physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science through guided lab-style experiments and real-world investigations.

You Be The Solution (YBTS)
Formerly known as You Be The Chemist (YBTC) — same national chemistry challenge, new name.
Get ready for a thrilling adventure with our flagship program, CEF You Be The Solution Challenge™ (formerly the You Be The Chemist Challenge®)! This exciting, team-based STEM competition is designed to provide a dynamic learning experience. It builds essential skills like critical thinking, effective communication, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving—key tools for academic success and future careers.
Our team trains locally at C0deEX and has represented Massachusetts at the national level, finishing as First Runner-Up (2nd place) at the 2025 National Challenge — one of only five state champion teams to make it to Nationals.
How It Works
Getting Started

Engage students in a fun and exciting STEM challenge. Enroll your student in our YBTS workshop program.

Attend our weekly workshops and learn the content through in-person, instructor-led classes — plus our LMS gives you access to materials anywhere for continued learning.

Participate in a series of tests and quizzes throughout the workshop; results determine team composition.
Next Steps

Participate in our Regional Challenge at MIT, held early to mid-March.

Submit completed team videos by the end of March.

State winners and National Finalists will be announced in early May.
Finish Line

Receive feedback on team performance, including answers to questions, percentile ranking, and video feedback in May.

Finalists compete for scholarships at the National Challenge at the beginning of June.

Our team took home First Runner-Up honors and a $12,000 educational scholarship at the 2025 You Be The Chemist National Challenge — competing against state champions from across the country.
